The Italian way

After the Milan shows are over, do you have this image of designers scrambling to dig through the archives for ideas and inspiration? Save for a few houses who still went for a more daring route (Versace, Bottega), it’s another season of calming down and re-thinking the old roots.

At Moschino, Rosella Jardini revived a bit of Franco’s eccentricity, something that he was famous for— poking fun at Chanel.

In his time, Franco created the infamous t-shirt that has a television set and read ‘Channel No.5″ (LOL) and mocked fashion classics such as the Chanel jacket with garish trimmings and details. There are a handful of skirt-suits in the Fall’10 collection that reminds me of Moschino’s past, especially this one which has earrings as trimmings, and the overload of gold that is so anti-Chanel, almost tacky, but then, it’s meant to be fun in the Italian spirit.

Lais Riberio @ Women

Michael-Kors-Backstage09 versacefw10laisribeiro

Truly sensation newcomer who transitioned well from capital to capital. After walking a whooping 26 shows in her country’s fashion week, she made her mark in New York walking for Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Proenza Sschouler, and judging by her showlist in Milan so far — Versace, Bottega Veneta and Gucci (today in 7 hours time), she is cementing her status as the one to watch this season. Lais really stood out on the Versace runway, no?

Prada Fall ‘10, très féminin

Maybe the days where zombie like stick thin models at Prada are gone, for now. The Fall ‘10 show is especially womanly (no better word). The casting of not one but three Victoria’s Secret Angels (Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes and Miranda Kerr), plus The Lara Stone and two top italian models Bianca Balti and Mariacarla Boscono, is a far cry from previous seasons’. It’s like pulling a Givenchy, but a whole lot more. The shape of the dresses, together with the explosion of ruffles at the bust area even make stick thin models look curvy. Some of the fabrics (patent, knit) and the coats look like they came straight out of the mens collection, but it’s the printed dresses that will probably be the hot sellers, and flood every magazine publication in no time.

Designer double take

Karl Lagerfeld photographed Iris Strubegger for the power packed Harper’s Bazaar US March ‘10, check out the way Iris mastered the art of impersonating different designers by the way of her lips and expressions. Impressive.

Watch these faces: Kirsi, Fei Fei

London Fashion Week is a good time to keep track of up and coming new faces, or get a hint of who might do well in Milan and Paris. Starting off with Kirsi Pyhonen, a fresh face from Finland who opened and closed Christopher Kane Fall ‘10, and killing many other major London shows with her tall frame (182cm, LEGS).

Next is Sun Fei Fei, finalist of Elite Model Look (there’s this thing about the competition, that the runners-up tend to be really successful, look at Constance Jablonski and Eniko Mihalik), best remembered from the Chanel Paris-Shang Hai show. She walked Marios Schwab, Christopher Kane, Jaeger, Vivienne Westwood red label so far. While Liu Wen is absent in London, Sun Fei Fei, Hyoni Kang, Tao Okamoto and Shu Pei have been the to-go asian faces on the runways.
