Cici Ali @ Ford

Can you see the uncanny resemblance with Kerry Washington? Cici only walked roughly 10 shows in New York for Spring ‘10, most notably Jason Wu and 3.1 Phillip Lim, and just recently, turned up at Toronto Fashion Week. While she doesn’t have that ‘it’ look that can rock Prada like Jourdan, or the pre-season buzz of R’el Dade, something about Cici screams commercial contract or make-up campaign. Let’s see where would she pop up at next season.

Fridays are so packed with events lately and just last week, I attended the premier Parco next NEXT Fashion Designer of the Year 2009 contest showcase, part of the Incubator programme which aims to nurture and support new talents. The word Incubator might or might not be familiar to you, in some cities it has already been a successful retail operation, think Japan, Melbourne, Toronto and New York is planning theirs (tauted as Mayor Bloomberg’s Project Runway).
Prior to this I have already spoken to some of the Incubates in a media party at Harry’s. It was great to know them in person, I was already a fan of Mae Pang and Nicole (of Skins n Bones) before the show on Friday.
Thinking back about the entire presentation as a whole, Michelle’s collection has more than a few winning points. From a consumer’s view, her pieces are absolutely accessible and appeal to masses, and dare I say, all ages, no? The pieces are very smart, well-balanced between commercial and artistic vision, seems pretty simple on the surface but it does have a distinctive point of view. They major in the no fuss formula, in the absence of ruffles, pleats, prints etc, it is one solid collection of nude and pastel looks. If the Parco committee wants to stress the designers to become business minded, that is a pretty good example.
Some others that caught my eyes: Mae Pang — quirky and eccentric, Nicole — investment-worthy multi-functional pieces, Larry Lam — genius styling and of course Max Tan, already wowed the audience at the Black Market Manifesto two Fridays ago.
Keep an eye out for the designers come Spring 2010, the opening of Parco.

The stiletto expert can work a pair of sky high heel-less shoes as if they are slippers to her.
Will she wear those McQueen Spring ‘10 monster platform boots?

When there were huge Macs at the Burberry bloggers station…

Still can’t believe this happened. Thank you Burberry!
The Prada casting for the Spring ‘10 show included a great mix of diversity. One notable newcomer amongst all is Shu Pei, together with Liu Wen, they are the first asian models to walk the show since Spring ‘07 (Hye Park did the honour). Shu Pei ended the season with a high in Paris — like her previous seasons, the city surely loves her— by walking major shows like McQueen, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and with new editorials in Vogue China for consecutive months, the refreshing beauty is proving to be the one to watch this season.

RTT: Tell us about how did you get discovered and when did you start modeling?
Shu Pei: I came to New York studying 2 years ago. A friend got me an interview with Next and after that I became a Next girl.
You did Prada and Miu Miu this season (congratulations!), it is a really big deal to walk Miuccia’s shows, can you describe the entire experience from receiving the news to the actual show?
Thanks. Actually it is the same just like other shows – I went to casting and after I got confirmed I went to fitting and the rehearsal and voila, the show. I was very excited when I know I can walk PRADA. It is PRADA!
The shoes at the Alexander McQueen this season are rumored to be 10 inches high, what was going through your mind when you were waking the show?
Yes it is difficult to walk in those shoes. They are quite heavy too. But strangely, I like them very much even it is difficult to walk with them. I love McQueen’s design. It is mind blowing, full of imagination. I was very excited and happy to walk McQueen’s show.
How was the backstage atmosphere? Were the other models nervous about walking in those shoes?
Everyone was nervous. It is such a wonderful show and it is even a bit intimidating. Everyone was nervous and excited. We sat on the floor and maneuvered with the help of our hands at backstage to move around. I remember Irina K look like a big spider by doing that and so did I. Hahaha
Do you get homesick when you are away working, especially during fashion week? How do you cope with that?
Oh yes I do. I call my mom when I am homesick.
The Vogue China team has been strongly supportive of their homegrown models like Du Juan, Liu Wen, how is your relationship with the people there?
I’d like to be Vogue China’s cover girl too!
There are more and more new faces debuting each season , what do you think is your unique feature or characteristic that stands out from others?
Be yourself.
Are there any goals that you would like to achieve? Tell us about it.
Christy Turlington is my icon in modeling. I want to be as elegant as she is one day.
What is the one most amazing moment that you have experienced so far in your career?
It is an amazing career. It is always busy but I really like it. I got chance to wear the most talented designers’ work on the stage and I got worked with so many wonderful and talented photographers, editors, stylists and makeup artists. So I really enjoy every moment of it.
Lastly, how do you relax when you are not working? Is there a certain interesting hobby of you that you would like to share?
I am a beach girl. I love beach. I go to beach as long as I get the chance. In New York I love to go out having dinner with my friends. There are so many restaurants in the city and it is fun to take a food adventure. Hey I am Chinese. I am quite adventurous when it comes to food.

Rianne ten Haken continuing her marvelous comeback with a consecutive Vogue Italia cover, this time, solo. Steven Meisel loves red heads, no? I smell a Spring ‘10 campaign in the works.
See the main editorial here. It’s a little Steven Klein-ish but Rianne’s red hair is simply attention catching. Great (dye) job!

Isabeli Fontana ph by David Sims. Interesting take on tribal chic, the font and colours are very unexpected for French Vogue.
See main editorial here.

Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson ph by Annie Leibovitz. Cover looks slightly over-photoshopped, especially the shadow and lighting.
This issue is mainly about being green and environmental friendly. As usual, Karlie Kloss is starring in most of the editorials.

Georgia May Jagger, english model, youngest daughter of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, Lara Stone look-a-like.
Up for consideration for Burberry’s campaign?

Katrin Thorman, finally a German Vogue cover for the German, rocking a softer look in Chanel sans her signature ice-queen stare. This is her second solo Vogue cover, Meisel shot her only-girl for Vogue Italia December ‘08.

Julia Stegner.

Daria Werbowy ph by Terry Richardson.

Chinese actress Zhou Xun ph by Norman Jean Roy.

Tao Okamoto ph by Inez & Vinoodh. This issue is all about Tao, their first Japanese cover model in 6 years. It’s still too early for an up-and-coming model to have a tribute issue (only the likes of Liya, Natasha and Lara gets that VIP treatment at a Vogue magazine) but it’s still a great moment for Tao. See the editorial highlights here.

Targeting the females, Lee Byung and Josh Hartnett for Vogue (not Homme).

Katia Zygouli

Toni Garrn ph by Greg Kadel. It’s a reprint, Toni’s apparently wearing a look from Louis Vuitton Fall ‘08. Don’t you think the cover screams beauty ad to you?

Toni’s the other Numéro cover of the month… very lackluster shot though.

Caroline Trentini, looking tougher for once with the bangs and strong brows.
W

Linda Evangelista ph by Pierpaolo Ferreri for the annual Art Issue. Check out Linda’s spread here, it mixes both political and religious elements in one editorial, probably one of W’s best issues of this year alone.

Lily Cole, now a model-turn-actress making a major acting debut in “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”.
