Interview with Star Creation Winners 2011





We spent five minutes with each winner of this year’s Star Creation – Tiang Boon Tieon (Malaysia), Chen Zhi Gang (China) and Tsai Ming Hung (Singapore) – whom share their thoughts on the competition and their future plans. The competition, now in its second year, is part of the Asia Fashion Exchange created to uncover Asia’s next fashion design talents. The three winners will walk away with a cash prize and a year-long internship with leading fashion retailer, F J Benjamin (Singapore); which includes an opportunity to launch their own capsule collection on the runway.



Tiang Boon Tieon, 27, Malaysia


How do you feel after winning Star Creation?
Of course I’m very happy. It’s really a huge surprise and very fortunate to win the award.


What do you see yourself in three to five years time?
For now I can definitely see myself doing the internship with FJ Benjamin, and then have my own company. I hope the knowledge will help. I have no idea where yet.


How has the entire Star Creation experience been like to you?
This is my first time joining a competition. Since I graduated, I haven’t gotten a lot of chance. For this I kinda of pick myself up and really got into it.


Who is your favourite designer then?
I have a lot but my all time favourite will be Alexander McQueen. He’s not here sadly. I also like Margiela.


Describe your design style?
My clothes has always to be about idea and concept, not about the trend. I am not really a trendy person.


What sets you apart from other designers?
My point of view, silhouette, all aspect.


Any plans for e-commerce?
No, not really. I am not very good with computer stuff.


What is your view on fashion show live streaming?
I think it is great because people can the information first hand, it’s gonna be really convenient.



Chen Zhi Gang, 28, China


How do you feel after winning Star Creation?
I have joined a lot of competition previously, and have won some awards, but for Star Creation, I came all the way here and I really wanted to win it. I was afraid that if I don’t win I would feel terrible. Now that I have won it, I felt relieved, like I have finally won it.


What do you see yourself in three to five years time?
I am very patriotic, I feel like I am on National Duty, I hope to become a Chinese designer who can make it internationally.


Who is your favourite designer then?
I am still waiting for a favourite designer. Because every designer has hits and misses. I think everyone’s standards are about the same. I have always been searching who is my favourite designer and until now, I still haven’t found one.


Describe your design style?
I have always wanted to emphasize on making clothes related to my personal experiences.


Any plans for e-commerce?
I am not a businessman and so I don’t know, but I will leave that to whoever who is going to handle my business.


What is your view on fashion show live streaming?
I think it is fine, anything to make the label better!



Tsai Ming Hung, 28, Singapore


How do you feel after winning Star Creation?
After winning this competition I feel more mature. I have joined competitions before, but not with so many international judges around.


What do you see yourself in three to five years time?
I hope to do what I like to do, design clothes for myself, start my own label. I come from Taiwan, I want to see if it’s possible I will start from here (in Singapore) and then go to Taiwan.


How has the entire Star Creation experience been like to you?
It’s been like a dream. All the while I have been working and rushing for the collection, I don’t have enough time to think of other things.


Who is your favourite designer then?
Antonio Marras and Undercover.


Describe your design style?
I am into creating a story. When people see it they will find it interesting and want to look into it to see what is it about. I also like special fabrics and materials.


Any plans for e-commerce?
I think it’s niche.


What is your view on livestreaming?
It will definitely help, in future it will get more advance, it is something that we can make use of.
