EXCLUSIVE: model interview with Shu Pei Qin @ Next
The Prada casting for the Spring ’10 show included a great mix of diversity. One notable newcomer amongst all is Shu Pei, together with Liu Wen, they are the first asian models to walk the show since Spring ’07 (Hye Park did the honour). Shu Pei ended the season with a high in Paris — like her previous seasons, the city surely loves her— by walking major shows like McQueen, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and with new editorials in Vogue China for consecutive months, the refreshing beauty is proving to be the one to watch this season.
RTT: Tell us about how did you get discovered and when did you start modeling?
Shu Pei: I came to New York studying 2 years ago. A friend got me an interview with Next and after that I became a Next girl.
You did Prada and Miu Miu this season (congratulations!), it is a really big deal to walk Miuccia’s shows, can you describe the entire experience from receiving the news to the actual show?
Thanks. Actually it is the same just like other shows – I went to casting and after I got confirmed I went to fitting and the rehearsal and voila, the show. I was very excited when I know I can walk PRADA. It is PRADA!
The shoes at the Alexander McQueen this season are rumored to be 10 inches high, what was going through your mind when you were waking the show?
Yes it is difficult to walk in those shoes. They are quite heavy too. But strangely, I like them very much even it is difficult to walk with them. I love McQueen’s design. It is mind blowing, full of imagination. I was very excited and happy to walk McQueen’s show.
How was the backstage atmosphere? Were the other models nervous about walking in those shoes?
Everyone was nervous. It is such a wonderful show and it is even a bit intimidating. Everyone was nervous and excited. We sat on the floor and maneuvered with the help of our hands at backstage to move around. I remember Irina K look like a big spider by doing that and so did I. Hahaha
Do you get homesick when you are away working, especially during fashion week? How do you cope with that?
Oh yes I do. I call my mom when I am homesick.
The Vogue China team has been strongly supportive of their homegrown models like Du Juan, Liu Wen, how is your relationship with the people there?
I’d like to be Vogue China’s cover girl too!
There are more and more new faces debuting each season , what do you think is your unique feature or characteristic that stands out from others?
Are there any goals that you would like to achieve? Tell us about it.
Christy Turlington is my icon in modeling. I want to be as elegant as she is one day.
What is the one most amazing moment that you have experienced so far in your career?
It is an amazing career. It is always busy but I really like it. I got chance to wear the most talented designers’ work on the stage and I got worked with so many wonderful and talented photographers, editors, stylists and makeup artists. So I really enjoy every moment of it.
Lastly, how do you relax when you are not working? Is there a certain interesting hobby of you that you would like to share?
I am a beach girl. I love beach. I go to beach as long as I get the chance. In New York I love to go out having dinner with my friends. There are so many restaurants in the city and it is fun to take a food adventure. Hey I am Chinese. I am quite adventurous when it comes to food.
