Direct from London Fashion Week – Mulberry Fall/Winter 11/12
Mulberry returned to its roots this season, showing a collection inspired by the picturesque English countryside, Roald Dahl’s ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and ethereal Turner Landscapes. One might’ve guessed as much from the screen-printed invites featuring woodland creatures. No detail was spared when embodying the theme and members of the press were treated to fox-shaped gingerbread cookies, toadstool cupcakes and autumnal beverages. This continued inside, with models emerging from a lush hedgerow complete with artificial birds.
The collection is all about mixing high and low (‘decadent glamour and countryside attire’, as they’ve put it), pairing fuss-free sweaters with delicate silk skirts and topping it off with an oversized Tillie. Detailing is key: flower appliqué was shown alongside quilted leather, and minimalist hardware featured prominently in the form of buttons, clasps, zips & belt buckles, all exuding the same effortless elegance as the models’ long wind-blown hair.
Accessories-wise, keep your eyes peeled for ‘Fox Locks’ on the new clutch wallet, Alexa and oversized Alexa, as well as fox face rivets in place of regular screws on the luxe haircalf Bayswater. New this season are the Heritage Bayswater Satchel (think Bayswater and Alexa hybrid with stud closures) and ‘buckle bag’ additions to the Alexa family, again playing on statement hardware –a real pity we couldn’t see these lovely bags from our vantage point!
Let’s not forget the star studded front row: Clemence Poesy, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Palermo, Kirsten Dunst, Gemma Arterton, not to mention the odd dog or two in the audience and on the runway.
