“Culture Chanel” at Guangzhou Opera House
The legendary french house is doing brilliant presenting their history and heritage to the Chinese – take out the entire first floor of a stunning brand new opera house, and display over 400 pieces of work including photographs, drawings, paintings, books, films etc. By the way, Guangzhou is their third stop, after Bei Jing and Shang Hai.
After visiting the Culture Chanel exhibition at the Guangzhou Opera House (amazing architecture work from Zaha Hadid, look straight out of Prometheus or some Sci-Fi film) last Tuesday, I actually thought it exceeded expectations. The exhibition felt complete, you have all the information and history of the house presented to you through a timeline and by the end of the exhibition there is even an area for you to sit and read a selection of books on Chanel. Not forgetting to mention a screening room which plays all the Chanel ads from fragrance short films to the notorious Brad Pitt one. If you walk through the exhibit with an audio guide, you could hear Karl Lagerfeld‘s name being mentioned over and over, stressing on how he “re-invented a certain classic” during which “season”… It’s a real lesson for the clueless. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, founder of the house, is the main star here, not Karl – photographs and drawings of her are displayed through out the exhibit.
Favourite part of Culture Chanel? The couture pieces. Pretty amazing that the public can get that close to seeing an actual Chanel couture piece (through glass door but that’s OK!) and also the original sketches by Karl Lagerfeld. Definitely worth a visit if you happened to be in the south-est part of China.
