September 2012 magazine covers
Rock The Trend monthly round-up of all major magazine covers + editorial highlights – see all the Vogues, the Numeros, the Ws – at a glance! Also included bi-annuals this time round – here we go…
After veteran model Carolyn Murphy‘s long term 10-year Estee Lauder contract ended last year. She took a well deserved break from the modelling world for a short period, and once she’s back BOOM – September covers. Steven Meisel shot Carolyn for the editorial “Face the Future” – super creepy prediction of what is going to happen in future from the plastic surgery/botox perspective.
Vogue Paris’s favourite models – Daria Werbowy, Kate Moss and Lara Stone share the September cover in the same Dolce & Gabbana dress and make up and styling. The last time Vogue Paris had multi-covers was back in May 2010, will this give fans a hard time to choose which one to get? My vote goes to Kate, looking the BEST in red lips. This is also the first issue of a new makeover, featuring a cleaner, airier design, with re-modeled typography and the use of a craft-paper-like brown background by new artistic director Germain Chauveau.
Lady Gaga in McQueen. Check out the album “The Vogue 120” featuring stylish singers, designers, actors, models (under 45) of the Moment photographed by Norman Jean Roy.
Karlie Kloss, ultra chic in a printed ensemble shot by Nick Knight. In this issue there is a coverage of the designers creations that were going to be paraded in London Olympics CLosing Ceremony alongside all the supermodels, see the spread “Midas Touch”.
Surprise celeb choice – Salma Hayek photographed by Alexi Lubomirski. Also in this issue, an androgynous spread with Kasia Struss “Wir Sind So Frei” shot by C. Knoepfel & St. Indlekofer and all-black cast editorial “Take it Easy” featuring Jasmine Tookes, Jeneil Williams, Grace Bol, Grace Mahary, Cora Emmanuel and Zuri Tibby by Greg Kadel.
Maryna Linchuk by Maciek Kobielski. Du Juan made a surprise appearance in this issue doing what she does best, being all doll-ed up in heavy oriental-style makeup for the spread “Operación Dragón” by Miguel Reveriego.
Natalia Vodianova by Mario Testino
Marie Piovesan, Daria Strokous, Liu Wen, Xiao Wen Ju, Lindsey Wixson, Tian Yi in ensembles from Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton for the 7th Anniversary issue shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Can you believe that Liu Wen has not scored a solo Vogue China cover yet?
Another Vogue September cover for Karlie Kloss, in a YSL by Stefano Pilati piece shot by Mikael Jansson (see her ed “The Metal Winner”). Zuzanna Bijoch also has an editorial inside “Hard at Work” by Sharif Hamza.
Alia Bhatt (19 year-old Bollywood actress and ‘IT’ girl)
Natasha Poly by Cuneyt Akeroglu
Australian actress and Dark Shadows star Bella Heathcote in Christian Dior, photographed by Will Davidson.
Patrycja Gardygajlo by Marcin Tyszka.
Ollie Henderson by Errikos Andreou
Vogue Hommes Nippon
YSL’s new creative director Hedi Slimane is behind the lens again shooting the Japanese Vogue Hommes cover with styling by Nicola Formichetti. The blond cover model is Gryphon O’Shea from LA.
Penelope Cruz shot by Mert & Marcus.
Edie Campbell by Patrick Demarchelier, a reprint from Vogue US July 2012
Daria Strokous, Edie Campbell, Karlie Kloss & Lindsey Wixson by Karl Lagerfeld (see the editorial “Manege Couture” here)
Emma Stone by Mikael Jansson, see the actress channeling her inner bad girl (smoking a cig!) in this issue. Also another must-see, the “Brief Encounter” spread inspired by the popular social app Grindr!
DAZED & CONFUSED
The controversial cover that result in a ban in seven countries – Azealia Banks blows up a condom for the Dazed & Confused September issue cover, photographed by Sharif Hamza.
A+ for artistic direction? Sui He and Jamie both went limbless for The Warrior issue in a surrealist, part sci-fi cover shot. The level of hipster-dom is top notch.
Another month another story on Hollywood next gen, except that this is actually a really interesting cast – Ambyr Childers, Chris Zylka, Haley Bennett (Seated), Analeigh Tipton, Shiloh Fernandez, Brie Larson and Tyler Posey. Also Kaya Scodelario wraps herself in a lace Dolce & Gabbana top for the second cover of the issue.
Debbie Harry of oldie band Blondie for the Music issue, watch a video of the cover shoot here!
Laura Carmichael, Michelle Dockery and Jessica Brown Findlay of costume drama Downton Abbey fame shot by Mert & Marcus, the editorial “Dance with a Stranger” is extremely beautiful. Also check out the haunting editorial “Nocturnal Moth Catching” by Daniel Jackson with models Codie Young, Daria Strokous, Erjona Ala and Ginta Lapina, styled by Victoria Young.
Nicole Kidman by Mario Testino, check out her super daring and sexy editorial “Truth or Bare”.
i-D is doing it again with not five or ten but TWELVE covers for the pre-fall ‘Youthful’ issue. From top left: Meghan Collison bares some skin for Patrick Demarchelier. Terry Richardson snapped Charlotte Free slapping a pizza across her face, Cara Delevingne in a fitted cap and Kelly Mittendorf toying with a teddy bear.
