Fashion photographers special
Written By Laila Lu on Aug 29th, 2008Being a photographer can be quite tough. You don’t get as much limelight as the models in the shoot, like how everyone will comment more about the way she worked it, and (unless you are Testino), you hardly get recognized. You know I always talk about models, designers etc… but I do have favourite photographers. I appreciate Greg Kadel and Mario Sorrenti’s work mostly, while Emma Summerton’s work has also been constantly impressive.
I am going to share some pictures of a few famous fashion photographers, so that in case you bumped into any of them, you can have a star struck moment.
Steven Meisel
He might be one of the most celebrated fashion photographers but he is notoriously media shy. If you google his name, I doubt you can find a picture of him. This is just his Facebook profile picture, you can catch him in the 80s’ movie ‘Portfolio’, and see how hyper he actually is— ”Wake up everybody! Keep Moving!”.
Mario Testino
Probably the most non-media shy of the batch, attending many shows and events… He gets attention mostly due to his many celeb clients and he dominates the best magazines— covers for Vogue US and editorials for Vogue Paris, and the best campaigns, think Versace, Ferragamo, Burberry, D&G….
Inez & Vinoodh
Dutch power couple behind ad campaigns like Gucci, Chloé, Stella McCartney, YSL, Givenchy and many Vogue Nippon covers + many editorials in Vogue Paris.
Mario Sorrenti (left, with Lily D)
He just returned to his aesthetics by posing on the cover of Purple magazine with Kate Moss. I am very in love with his Nina Ricci fall 08′ campaign featuring Natasha Poly, that’s where I started to like his work even more.
Patrick Demarchelier (right, with wife Mia)
Remember how Miranda Priestly kept asking for him in ‘The Devil Weas Prada’? He has been around for ages but seems to have slowed down a little in recent years.
Steven Klein (right, with Gwyneth Paltrow)
His recent work (Loewe, D&G…) seems to involve lots of horses & other animals… and very moody ( Dolce & Gabbana anyone?)
David Sims (right, with wife Luella Bartley)
Shoots all Balenciaga ads, enough said.
Craig McDean (right, with Grace Coddington)

The man behind those Dior, Oscar de la Renta & Blumarine ads (I am STILL waiting for McQueen). Trivia: he began his career as an assistant to Nick Knight.
Greg Kadel (right, with Cameron Russel)
I love all his work for Numéro and Vogue China. Also, for the fact that he has a fine taste in models.
Mert & Marcus
Dominates W and all Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu ads. Seriously, they are dead crazy about colours yeah?
Terry Richardson (right)

ALL.THOSE.TOM.FORD.ADS.
Bruce Weber (left), Jurgen Teller (right) and Paolo Roversi
My budding photographer friend Best admires Paolo. His work with Sasha P is pure magic (remember ‘Enchanted Gardens’ and ‘Couture Memoirs’?). And don’t you think Bruce looks like the cute Santa Claus?
