Margiela X H&M – launching 15th NovemberWritten By Stephanie on Jun 13th, 2012
The rumours that have been circulating on Twitter about a collaboration between the ultra-cool fashion house and H&M are, as it turns out, joyously true. Katie Grand of LOVE Magazine started the rumor yesterday with her tweet “Margiela will collaborate with H&M” – about 19 hours before H&M’s official announcement hit our inboxes. So that was 19 hours worth of speculation on twitter, amongst fashion blogs, in the office… everywhere!
In a statement on H&M’s website, Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M, said “Maison Martin Margiela is one of the most important and influential fashion houses of the past three decades. I am so excited by this collaboration which will give fashion lovers around the world the chance to wear special pieces by Maison Martin Margiela. This collaboration will be a great and memorable fashion moment.”
The high-end label also added its own comments, saying “We are very happy to present MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA pieces with H&M, offering a new interpretation of our vision. The democracy of our fashion has always been at the centre of our creativity, and the collaboration with H&M allows us to push this instinct further. We will bring together the contrasting universes of the two houses in ways that will surprise all.”
The partnership seems to mark a slight shift away from collaborations with instantly recognisable, extremely high-profile design houses. MMM is only the third avant grade designer to collaborate with H&M after Rei Kawakubo and Viktor & Rolf, and it is definitely interesting to see how designers who are famous for making unwearable clothes wearable enough for high-street for once. The Margiela aesthetic is definitely of a more, if you may, avant-garde variety, and I look forward to seeing how the two brands join forces – hopefully bringing us masses some of that Parisian je ne sais quoi at prices that don’t break the bank. The collection will be available in H&M stores on November 15.
