Formichetti named creative director at Thierry Mugler

Stylist for Lady Gaga, creative director of Dazed & Confused, fashion director of Vogue Hommes Japan, contributing fashion editor of V MAGAZINE – Nicola Formichetti can be considered as the ultimate fashion all-rounder. The Italian-Japanese stylist now has a new role to fill – creative director at Thierry Mugler, replacing Spanish designer Rosemary Rodriguez (right pict), who has been creating “Thierry Mugler Edition” luxury women’s collection since 2008.

The fashion house has came a long way since it shuttered in 2003 due to poor sales. Since then the focus has been on producing signature fragrances like the blockbuster scent ‘Alien’ in 2005, now generating close to US$280 million (S$384 million) in annual sales. A third named ‘Womanity’, which was launched in Paris in July, is expected to add US$80 million in sales. The success of the fragrance line has largely contributed to the recent revival of the ready-to-wear business.

‘We are probably the only brand in feminine fragrances that is so successful despite not having an active fashion line,’ said Joel Palix, the president of the Thierry Mugler brand and Clarins Fragrance Group Worldwide.

Nicola’s first collection for Thierry Mugler drops Fall/Winter 2011/2012.
