Designer spotlight – Billy Reid
Billy Reid, the Alabama-based menswear designer who shocked everyone by taking home the winning $300,000 prize at the recent CFDA/Vogue Fund Awards, might not be familiar to the majority due to having only been showing at New York Fashion Week for two seasons. But with all the newly gained attention from the award plus plans for expansion, it won’t not be long before the label starts getting more press coverage and mentions.
The pictures below are from his Spring/Summer 2011 presentation at milk studios. Billy drew inspiration from his home state Louisiana for his collection – a dusty, twenties-era New Orleans, and therefore explains the slightly rugged details (raw hems), washed leather and the caramel tones. His pieces were praised for being functional, smartly-designed yet very well-made at the same time, a pretty good combination to score with the customers and media.
