Runway + Detail Photos: Christian Dior Couture by Raf Simons
The current Paris Haute Couture fashion week feels especially exciting because Raf Simons, ex-Jil Sander designer, is rolling out his debut collection for Christian Dior. It’s Raf Simons very first couture outing in the Creative Director role after all, and the show was attended by his equally major rival designers: Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, Louis Vuitton’s Marc Jacobs, Versace’s Donatella Versace, Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, Christopher Kane, Olivier Theyskens, Azzedine Alaia, Diane von Furstenberg and Pierre Cardin, plus Anna Wintour who was also spotted at a dinner in Ritz with John Galliano.
Why the hype? Before Dior, talking more about business, it looks like anything surrounding the name Raf Simons immediately gets propelled to a cool cult status, so imagine punching that into a historic couture house, it feels like marrying two impossible elements together. But the look is exactly like what I would have imagined, maybe a collection like this will actually please a certain cliente who favors a subtle, quiet type of elegance. I like how Raf’s focus is into the smaller details and the fabrics. The shapes and silhouettes are easy to “digest” from the first look and you know where exactly he’s going with the Dior look – the tiny, tiny waist and the full skirt that are just oh-so classically lady-like, it’s almost fail-proof.
