Fall trend alert: high pockets

August 17, 2007 · 1 Comment

I noticed this trend of tucking your hands into jackets with pockets positioned at the chest area…

Isn’t it uncomfortable? Like feeling your own… chest? But it’s a very new, never-seen-before way of pocket positioning that keeps your hands warm and literally ‘close to heart’. I think it looks rather quirky and chic though.

London Spring/Summer 08′ fashion shows to watch out for

August 15, 2007 · 4 Comments

In the acclaimed novel ’The Devil Wears Prada’, Miranda Priestly said that everybody goes to Milan and Paris and completely skips the London shows. It’s kinda true. Comparing London Fashion Week to the likes of the other fashion capitals’, it’s lying relatively low. The organizers have since recruited a few big name designers to showcase their runways in London and hopefully, attract more fashion figures in those glitzy front row seats. Last season was Marc by Marc Jacobs, which killed off all the other shows with the attention. This time, it will be Matthew Williamson and Luella Bartley, both formerly of New York FW but are natives of Britain, to help spice up the week.

Saturday 15th September

09:30 Paul Costelloe
10:30 Gavin Douglas
11:45 Caroline Charles
14:00 Ben De Lisi
15:45 Bora Aksu
17:00 Ashley Isham
18:15 Unconditional
19:30 Issa

I’m looking at…

left: Gavin Douglas himself,  Ashley Isham’s Fall/Winter runway

I’m an Ashley Isham fan most probably because he is from Singapore too and being one of the greatest export to the fashion world, he certainly does not disappoint, with loads of critics tauting him as an up-and-coming design talent to watch out for.
And then,  Gavin Douglas. Firstly, he is black and you don’t really see a lot of black designers out there who’s doing so good. Secondly, he has a unique laid-back style and he embraces a woman’s curve, making really sexy clothes with a strong silhouette. By the way, he won the coveted Fashion Fringe competition in 2006.

Sunday 16th September

09:30 PPQ
10:45 Armand Basi
12:00 Danielle Scutt
12:00 Louise Goldin
13:15 Amanda Wakeley
14:30 Peter Jensen
15:45 Gareth Pugh

19:30 Julien Macdonald

I’m looking at

Amanda is a great bridal designer that can draw comparisons with Vera Wang and she seems to know what a woman wants. For example, if you want to keep yourself warm but still remain stylish for the cold season, check out her Fall/Winter collection. It’s got really beautiful coats with corset belts and fur collars.
I will also be checking out Todd Lynn, known as the ‘King of Rock & Roll’ of fashion.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
left: Todd Lynn, his version of masculine feminity

I was real crazy over menswear for women and his ultra masculine fall/winter collection is just fabulous.  I’m craving for the very popular boyfriend trousers!
Last one, I think Gareth Pugh deserves a little mention. His designs are so flamboyant and dramatic that they look like they do not belong to the London crowd at all. He reminds me of John Galliano meets Hussein Chalayan meets Giles Deacon… ummm get it?

Monday 17th September

10:45 Luella
12:00 Jasper Conran
13:15 Margaret Howell
14:30 Christopher Kane
15:45 John Rocha
17:00 Basso and Brooke
18:15 Jonathan Saunders
19:30 Ann-Sofie Back

I’m looking at…
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Who else? The sensational Christopher Kane, whose show has been one of the biggest highlights of LFW ever since his debut in SS07. His neon minis have been so popular and I think what takes him to where he is today is his early working experience in Versace. As you can see from his designs, he is very curve-conscious, women love that. And do you know that his first Fall/Winter show is sponsored by Swarovski’s crystals and Manolo Blahnik’s shoes?
Do take a peek at Basso & Brooke’s show. They won the first Fashion Fringe competition… should be rather promising.

Tuesday 18th September

09:30 Duro Olowu
10:30 Paul Smith Women
12:00 Isabella Blow Private Memorial Service
13:30 Nicole Farhi
14:45 Jens Laugesen
16:00 Sinha-Stanic
17:15 Erdem
18:30 Clare Tough

I’m looking at…
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Actually, I have already seen pictures of his Spring/Summer 08 collection presented at the recent Copenhagen fashion week already and it is pretty good. Vogue.com actually highlighted it out of all the other shows. I like how he work minimalism with clean, sleek silhouettes.
Another must-see is designing duo Sinha-Stanic who were runners-up in the first Fashion Fringe competition to winners Basso & Brooke. They have a wide variety of inspirations and their clothes are made for women not only to look good but be, according to critics, ‘’sinuous, modern, confident luxury”.

Wednesday 19th September

09:30 Betty Jackson
10:30 Roksanda Ilincic
11:45 Matthew Williamson
12:45 Ashish N Soni
13:45 Aquascutum
15:00 Rodnik
16:15 Richard Nicoll
17:30 Fashion
18:30 Nathan Jenden
19:30 Giles

I’m looking at…
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
After Christopher Kane, Giles is the other show that people will rush to get the tickets. They love how he plays games with fashion, churning out showstopping funky designs one after another and keeps people guessing and be in love with the fun side of fashion. Plus, Giles’ show always manage to boast the most impressive line of supermodels on the catwalk. By the way, he is the latest British Designer Of the Year and that is a really great honour

Thursday 20th September

09:30 Osman Yousefzada
10:30 Asprey
11:45 Antoni & Alison
13:00 Fashion Fringe
14:45 Modernist
16:00 MAN
17:15 Biba
18:30 Allegra Hicks
19:45 Adidas by Stella McCartney

I’m looking at…
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
left: Bella Freud showcasing her last collection for Biba, Lily Cole opening the show for Osman Yousefzada

Osman Yousefzada, who is talented enough to score himself the New Generation sponsorship for the forthcoming LFW event. Watch out for that. But the real highlight is– after Bella Freud left Biba, a whole new creative team, headed by Hector Castro, will be debuting their effort for Britain’s most iconic and fastest-selling label. Anticipation? Yes.

( For more FW0708 fashion ad campaigns :I, II, III, IV, V)

Hermes
model: Daria Werbowy

‘Dance With The Orange Ribbon’, pretty cool huh? So glad to see Daria being back in the scene scoring her third ad campaign after Valentino and Missoni.

Balenciaga
models: Suvi Koponen, Anabela Belikova
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
One’s wooden and stoned, the other’s jumping crazy, but these ads are so powerful and regal, we’re down with respect.

Karl Lagerfeld
model: Gemma Ward
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Karl’s favourite girl is back for his new ads. What’s with the man hopping around behind Gemma? Maybe it’s to make her look smarter?

Philosophy Di Alberta Ferreti
models: Laragh McCann, Anzhelika Kocheba

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
A very strong countryside-chic feel to these ads. Lovely, though the models are relatively unknown.

Moschino
models: (First pict) Marianne Berglund, Sara Visser, Veronika Antsipava, Claudia Tassone, Noreen Carmody, Elianne Smit & Dioni Tabbers (Second pict) Ai Tominaga, Han Jin, Daul Kim, Emma Pei, Eugenia M…
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Can’t manage to name all the models in the second picture but apparently, they’re going for this quirky asian-dolls look with a bevy of the most well-known and in-demand asian fashion models around.

Trussardi

Celine
models: Bette Franke, Emmanuelle Seigner

Cesare Paciotti

Gosh she’s baring her tush…

Pinko
model: Naomi Campbell

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Is this an ad trend? Making a man look silly behind a smartly dresses woman? I don’t like these shots though, can’t believe Naomi actually agreed to star in these Pinko ads. They look cheap.

Mulberry
models: Suvi Koponen, Caroline Trentini

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Long blonde hair, dark red lips and tons of expensive handbags… reminds me of spoilt rich girls and Suvi looks real pretty in these!

Christian Lacroix
model: Vlada Roslyakova

What’s with the blue background? But I like this more than last season’s ads featuring Coco and that forest though.

Nine West
model: Natasha Poly

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Natasha Poly returns for another season of the Nine West ads.

Giorgio Armani Cosmetics
model: Sasha Pivovarova
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Hell, Sasha might have been booked for only one ad campaign (Prada) this season but who knows she can look so gorgeous in beauty ads too!

Emporio Armani
model: Barbara Berger
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Hmmm, don’t really know who’s that model but the short pixie hair with those smoky eyes? Reminds me of Edie Sedgwick!

Salvatore Ferragamo
model: Claudia Schiffer, Stephanie Seymour
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
The ads are pretty boring with old models, black & white settings, getting-out-of-the-car-glamourously pose… I prefer last season’s ads with Carmen Kass which were fresher and more elegant.

Estee Lauder
models: Hilary Rhoda, Carolyn Murphy
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
They like to choose those all-american beauties for their ad campaigns and this is definitely another breakthrough for Hilary.

Y-3
model: Masha Novoselova

Daks
model: Elisa Crombez
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Max & Co.
model:Elisa Crombez
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Paul Ka
model: Elisa Crombez
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The ever in-demand Elise Crombez has been booked for four ad campaigns this season…

Nicole Farhi
model: Alana Zimmer
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Reminds me of witches… looks like an ultra dark & gloomy collection

Tommy Hilfiger
models: Coco Rocha, Behati Prinsloo
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
After last season’s amazonia ads featuring Anja Rubik, Coco & Behati replaced her as the Tommy girls. They look like a bunch of college students don’t they?

Vera Wang
model: Yana Karpova
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
The ever elegant and feminine Vera Wang… but it remindS me of Christian Lacroix’s FW07 collection though, especially the hairpiece.

Loreal Glambronze
models: Brenda Costa, Doutzen Kroes
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
At least Loreal is turning to real models instead of celebrities to sell their products right now… Doutzen looks gorgeous as usual.

French Connection
model: Solange Wilvert
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

H&M
models: Anja Rubik, Freja Beha Erichsen, Tasha Tilberg
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
This looks almost like a replica of the Chloe ads, with two of the same models ( Tasha looks like Shalom anyways) and same searching-for-something poses…

Hugo Boss ‘Orange’
model: Devon Aoki
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
You mean, she still has a modelling career? After acting in strings of trashy movies?

Jil Sander
models: Irina Kulikova, Kasia Struss
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Words have it that fashion is looking for a new generation of models with that youthful and quirky look. Since Jil Sander’s clothes look more like made-for-old-women, featuring darling models in their ads have been a tradition. This is very dreamy and sweet.

Ralph Lauren Blue Label
models: Valentina Zeliaeva, Magdelena Frackowiak

Sonial Rykiel
model: Iekeliene Stange

Oscar de la Renta

John Galliano
model: Agyness Deyn
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

What John Galliano meant for– totally flamboyant with crazy patterns and colours

Pollini
model: Suzanne Diaz
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
A VERY boring ad. Plus, this look, dress-with-black-tights is so overrated!

Hogan
models: Fabiana Semprebom, Jeisa Chiminazzo
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
More Brazilian belles to model for this label. After last season’s Caroline Trentini, Fabiana and Jeisa are hailing their latest ads.

Topshop
model: Mona Johannesson
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
The same sort of unknown-model-posing-with-chic-clothes ads.

St.John
model/celeb: Angelina Jolie
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
A typical St.John ad, with Angie trying hard to pose like a real model and showing off her bee-stung lips.

Mango
model/celeb: Penelope Cruz
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

TSE
model: Iselin Steiro
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

David Yurman
model: Kate Moss
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Kate can really work this ‘classy & fabulous’ look. This is her third David Yurman ad campaign, she’s showing no sign of slowing down.

Ports 1961
model: Mirka Michlikova
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Badgley Mischka
model: Teri Hatcher
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I think it’s one of those brands that, you know, depend heavily on celebs for commercialism. I still remember those Olsen twins ads… but the Teri Hatcher ones really give me goosebumps for some reason.

Paul & Joe
model: Jessica Miller
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Very elegant.

La Perla
model: Diana Dondoe
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Love the settings. It makes a supposedly trashy lingerie ad look classy and beautiful.

Nicole Miller

No helmets for me, thank you.

August 12, 2007 · 4 Comments

The biker-chic look has been going on for a while but I didn’t expect it to make such a big comeback in the Fall/Winter 07/08 season. On the runways of Yves Saint Laurent and Celine, the helmet-like hats totally spiced up the edgy look. The thing is, in real life, will you wear it out?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Stefano Pilati’s latest work for YSL shows a lot of depth and some says it is his best effort for the label. There is this Parisian-chicness with a cool cut in the collection pieces but I will really wonder who’s going to wear those hats… especially the one in the middle.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Take a closer look, the shades looks so matching with the leather

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Celine’s current Croatian designer Ivana Omazic, has given the elegant Celine woman a tinge of rebel by piling on the black leather gloves and funky ankle boots. Somehow, the hats suit the new image he is going for real well.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
You can’t wear this without heavy eye makeup. But beware, people may mistaken you as a robber.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I watch a lot of English football games too and guess what, I think Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech’s helmet, which he wears for protection, looks strikingly familiar to those on the runways! Inspiration?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Lily Donaldson modelling a gigantic furry helmet in a tiger print dress… I’m so going to laugh at anybody who wears this on the streets.

The bottomline is that these helmet-ish hats are one of the ultimate accessory for the cool gangster looks but there are a lot of restrictions on how to wear it. If you are thinking of rocking these hats be mindful that your dressing has to be rather dull in colour, preferably black or grey, and aviator shades! You may need them to complete the look.

Numero 86 ”Cartoon”

August 11, 2007 · 5 Comments

I have always thought that Vogue is the ultimate fashion bible and a mag that no fashion lovers can live without. But ever since it has became more and more commercial, I decided to turn to Numero and gosh, what a surprise. Now I can have another magazine of  pure artistic fashion to ogle on other than Vogue Italia. And Greg Kadel is a darn good photographer too.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
This issue is titled ‘Cartoon’, with the unstoppable Sasha Pivovarova on the cover in Christian Dior. Paying tribute to comics and cartoons, models wore the new season’s clothes and are styled as some famous characters.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Start off with covergirl Sasha in Dolce&Gabbana in an editorial called ‘I’m just drawn like that’.
This shot totally evokes ‘femme fatale’ to full and Sasha’s incredibly eerie looks suit this theme real well.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Ok I don’t know who is this model but she is playing goth chick ‘Emily the Strange’… in a CHANEL bubble jacket and iconic quilted bag. This is when class meets rebel which turns surprisingly f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s! The hair reminds me of Jessica Stam’s Dior ads though but it’s really as haunting as seeing Adam’s family.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Jessica Miller in a Lanvin studded metallic dress as ‘Spider Woman’. I don’t even know spidey has got a female companion but she looks cool enough to climb those walls in this kick-ass suit.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Shannan Click in Jean Paul Gaultier and Lanvin boots.
Have you heard of Chibi Maruko-Chan? She’s a very popular Japanese cartoon character in Asia –a smart & quirky young school girl who is very petite. Part of the meaning of her name is ‘cherry’ and so that gives a reason why there’re two gigantic cherries hanging off Shannan’s shoulders. I think they add volume to this shot too.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
La balade de la mer salée means ‘The walk of the salty sea’ so I guess Anja Rubik is playing Popeye here. Eveybody is talking about Anja’s new blonde crop which is so handsome and she actually looks like the iconic Edie Sedgwick!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
This looks really similar. Hilary Rhoda, who’s in Azzedine, has got such a vampire-ish features.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Ok since there’s no such character called Wonder Girl, this modelling new-comer Siri Tollerod, in Hermes, is probably imitating Wonder Woman here. Electrifying and powerful.

Hell, I’m so going to get my hands on this issue once it hits the stands.

Get your hands off fashion!

August 8, 2007 · 4 Comments

Well I don’t really understand the appeal of Lindsay Lohan… to fashion! She does not have a healthy appeal or modelsque looks so why put her on magazine covers month after month and ad campaigns season after season? For the sake of commercialism and attention? But she’s got such a wild behavior and has been constantly plastered with scandals. If Kate Moss get ditched for her cocaine act, why Lindsay still managed to linger around? To get associated with her may not be good for any brand or company’s reputation!

Here’s her recent ‘achievements’ in fashion:
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Elle magazine covers

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
                                        Jill Stuart ads

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Last season’s Miu Miu ads, which in my opinion, actually looks pretty darn good!

However, you’ve got to check out the headlines: Lindsay Steals Clothes At Elle photoshoot, gets dumped by Louis Vuitton
According to reports, “Louis Vuitton had sent over some samples for her to wear in the shoot. Lindsay kept shoving the clothes into her bag, and a stylist’s assistant kept getting them out of the bag, only to have Lindsay keep trying to take them. She ended up walking off with a very expensive shirt and some other items – which screwed Louis Vuitton because they were set to go to Vogue, W and Harper’s Bazaar for other shoots. They were furious and kept trying to get their clothes back, but . . . Lindsay walked out with them and never returned calls.”

Lindsay maybe a talented actress but she’s really screwing up her career. She has long wanted to model for Chanel and Louis Vuitton actually once considered featuring her in their ads. Please, Lindsay, before you get your personal life fixed, get your hands off fashion!

New belt trend

August 5, 2007 · 1 Comment

I’m not sure if this is a trend but I’ve been tying my belts this way…

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
from left: Karen Walker, Marni, Sportmax (SS05)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Look closer at how Marni did it…

I own a lot of loose tops like babydoll dresses & tunics and right before I go out, I will just grab whatever belt that matches my top and tie it that way. It’s so easy to actually ’stylize’ a boring plain top and put emphasis on the waist.
Here’s how I do it:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Buckle your belt at the tightest so that you can have a long extra stretch of it left

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Tuck it in…

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
… then pull it down…

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
It’s done! Fast and easy.

Will you do it?
